new painting: bluebird vs blackbird series

| Share

I know it seems like I have retired from my web post here, but I have been working behind the scenes on various projects. I have a number of things coming up in the fall that I want to be ready for, so I’ve been holed up in my studio.

Yes, I know it’s summer and I need to be outside enjoying every drop of this lovely weather. I feel incredibly guilty hiding in my lair, because in a blink of an eye I am going to be writing heated letters to March again (like this one and this one )

But! I have had all my windows open and a breeze blowing in while lodged in there, does that count? At times I do work outside, but my collage pieces tend to blow around which is irritating. So I try to go out there on the porch to do watercolor parts and then come inside and stay awake all night working on the collage parts. Fair enough, I feel. My guilt ridden self feels some relief anyway.

So along with a new batch of art cards I’ve been working on (I’ll post them here soon) – here is my latest piece. It’s the second installment in a series involving the Bluebird of Happiness and the Blackbird of Destruction (or Depression if you prefer. The Double D I like to call him). It’s only no. 2 in the series, so don’t be alarmed by the bluebird’s progress. Yet.

bluebird of happiness vs blackbird of destruction: fighting a losing battle
watercolor, ink and collage
15.5in x 6in

*Note: the first installment of this series is a diptych, though not currently presented that way here on the site. I moved that piece’s 2 thumbnails in the order at the top right if you would like to look at this series in context.

I love it.

And not to be Ms Pollyanna Sunshine, but I am rooting for the bluebird.  Am I not supposed to?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh I know it may not look like it, but I am also rooting for him.

I really, really, really, really am.

Quietly and secretly. In the wings. Well not literally, but perhaps.

(and thank you Thales)

This is incredible...then again, all your work always is!

Maybe they could work together? Seriously, bluebird doesn’t want to do the firings and bad news, and blackbird is too goth to sing “Doe, a deer, a female deer./Ray, a drop of golden sun./Me, a name I call myself./Far, a long, long way to run./Sew, a needle pulling thread,/La, a note to follow sew,/Tea, a drink with jam and bread!/That will bring us back to do oh-oh-oh!”

If either one wins they’re stuck doing the job of the other.
